Le 1er mois lunaire de Moharram de l’an 1400 de l’Hégire – correspondant, à la longitude de La Mecque et de Médine, au 20 novembre 1979 l’Islam a achevé quatorze siècles de son
existence. D’un coup, il s’était, au lendemain de la Conquête arabe, élevé au niveau d’une religion de salut universel, apportée à l’humanité entière. Ses idéaux, ses modes de vie, ses formes de
penser, dominent aujourd’hui, en Asie et en Afrique, des aires immenses; il commence à rayonner sur le reste de la planète.
Son expansion, il la doit au Coran, dont un arabe de Qoreich, Mohammad ibn-Abdullah, du clan des Bani-Hashem, a été l’annonciateur inspiré. Sa venue a marqué l’ouverture d’une ère nouvelle. Du lointain rocher qui le retenait captif, Napoléon avait d’un mot défini la portée historique de sa mission: Mahomet fut, disait-il, «le grand homme qui avait changé la face du monde… en remuant des masses… la marche du génie ». * Le Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène (Bibliothèque de la Pléiade), t.
