L’Orient est une préoccupation générale qui agite l’Europe du XIXe siècle ; la production picturale reflète très précisément l’histoire de cet intérêt né avec la campagne d’Égypte de 1798 et lié aux évolutions de la «question d’Orient», dont l’insurrection grecque à partir de 1821 ou la prise d’Alger en 1830 marquent entre autres les étapes.
À la lumière de recherches récentes, la synthèse de Christine Peltre retrace les vibrations artistiques de cette préoccupation au sein des écoles européennes – où se détache l’adhésion massive des Français et des Britanniques. La « haute poésie » de l’Orient romantique est souvent inspirée par Byron ou Hugo et recherche l’effet dramatique, comme en témoignent les compositions de David Roberts, de Decamps ou Delacroix. Ces interprétations se distinguent du regard « ethnographique » du milieu du siècle, illustré par de grands voyageurs comme Lewis, Fromentin ou Gérôme, tandis qu’avec Ingres ou Monticelli se poursuivent les rêves d’atelier. Ces œuvres de terrain ou de laboratoire préludent à la modernité du « troisième style », fusion de l’Europe et de l’Orient pressentie par August Macke comme par Wassily Kandinsky.
Témoins d’une histoire qu’ils contribuent à illustrer, les peintres de l’orientalisme écrivent donc aussi la leur : celle d’une quête spirituelle et plastique qui cherche à l’« Est » l’idéal de pureté « primitive ».
CHRISTINE PELTRE est professeur d’histoire de l’art contemporain à l’université des Sciences humaines de Strasbourg, Agrégée de lettres classiques, elle a étudié le périple grec des artistes du XIX siècle (Retour en Arcadie, 1997). Spécialiste de l’orientalisme, elle a publié sur ce sujet de nombreux travaux, dont L’Atelier du voyage (1995) et a
récemment contribué aux catalogues d’exposition Raffet (1999), Le Maroc de Matisse et Jacques Majorelle (1999-2000).
Elle prépare actuellement une monographie consacrée à Théodore Chassériau (1819-1856).

We ship as soon as possible, but within maximum 4 days after the order is received.

Packages are sent with track code to guarantee reception, and delay is rare. In the event of non-delivery or delay, nothing can be done for 7 days. At the end of this period, on our being informed, a demand will be made for the package to be traced. If 14 days after the first dispatch there is still no delivery, a second package will be sent free.
Packages inside Lebanon are sent registered through LibanPost to guarantee reception, and delay or non-delivery is rare. In the event of non-delivery, nothing can be done for 6 days. At the end of this period, on our being informed, a demand will be made to LibanPost for the package to be traced. If 12 days after the first dispatch there is still no delivery, a second package will be sent free.
