It was in 1994 when the Lebanese British Friends of the National Museum first started the newsletter, National Museum News, on behalf of the Directorate General of Antiquities. The aim of this publication was, in the words of the Director General, “to represent the aspirations, activities, and hopes of the Department of Antiquities of Lebanon”.

Post-war reconstruction was then well on its way in Lebanon and the directorate was faced with the colossal task of rescuing the country’s archaeological treasures. Much publicity was needed to raise public awareness of the Beirut National Museum and monitor the progress made in its rebuilding. NMN was, at that time, the only publication in which information could be found on archaeological and conservation projects related to the museum and its collection.

As of November 1999, the Beirut National Museum reopened its doors to the general public and NMN has since broadened its scope and evolved from a museum’s newsletter to an independent journal of history and archaeology with Lebanon as its primary field of study. The goal of this new journal, now known as Archaeology and History in Lebanon (AHL) is to continue disseminating information on Lebanon’s cultural heritage.

This book covers most research programs undertaken in Lebanon’s ancient sites, namely: Tyre, Tell Rachidieh, Sidon, Eshmun, Chhîm, Beirut, Byblos, Yanouh, Tripoli, Tell Arqa, Hourriye, The Qadisha Valley, The Cedars, Baalbek and Kamid El Loz. Each one of these sites is introduced by a leading archaeologist or historian who summarizes his or her ten years of achievements on site. Further general articles are a selection from NMN’s and AHL’s last ten years and discuss nineteenth-century painters as well as travelers, collectors, etc…

We would like to thank Dr. Camille Asmar, former Director of Antiquities, for expressing the wish to create the journal and for all the efforts he provided to encourage its publication. Our thanks extend to the current Director, Mr Frédéric Husseini for his help and support as well as to AHL’s editorial staff for its dedication and pro bono work over the years.

This book was only made possible through the generous support of Byblos Bank Group, Adir, Assurances Banque Populaire-France, and Association Philippe Jabre.
