Il y a tout juste cinquante ans, en 1946, le port de Beyrouth voyait partir les derniers soldats français. La France renonçait alors à la position privilégiée qu’elle avait occupée, depuis des siècles, au Levant. Le mandat international qu’elle exerçait depuis 1920 sur la Syrie et le Liban était définitivement clos.
Notre mémoire demeurée attentive aux guerres d’Indochine et d’Algérie, aux indépendances des pays de l’Afrique coloniale – s’avère plutôt vacillante quand il s’agit d’évoquer cette présence française au Proche-Orient. Dans l’imaginaire collectif, Lawrence d’Arabie y règne encore en maître incontesté.
Cette chronique photographique, extraordinairement riche et variée, mais singulièrement méconnue, dépeint cette rencontre entre la France et l’Orient arabe, avec ses heurts inévitables, ses échecs, ses réussites.
Des dizaines de milliers de soldats, de diplomates, d’ingénieurs, de missionnaires, d’enseignants et d’archéologues ont sillonné la région, de la révolte arabe aux lendemains de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, d’Akaba à Adana, de Beyrouth à Deir ez-Zor, en passant par Jérusalem, Damas et Alep. Ce sont leurs images que cet album dévoile, puisées dans les archives photographiques, en très grande partie inédites, du ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Service historique de l’armée de terre, dans les collections du musée Albert-Kahn et de l’Institut Charles-de-Gaulle, dans les collections privées et les albums de famille.
Apportant souvent un témoignage ambigu de la réalité politique et sociale du Proche-Orient, ces photographies évoquent avant tout la profonde fascination qu’a exercée sur les Français cette région, berceau des grandes croyances, carrefour des civilisations. A ce titre, elles offrent un contrepoint visuel aux récits de ceux qui ont abordé – à la fois éblouis et inquiets – les rivages de la Méditerranée orientale. Dans cet Orient compliqué, Charles de Gaulle fut l’un d’eux, précédé par Pierre Benoît, Joseph Kessel, le général Weygand, les frères Tharaud, Louis Massignon et tant d’autres.

Packages are sent with track code to guarantee reception, and delay is rare. In the event of non-delivery or delay, nothing can be done for 7 days. At the end of this period, on our being informed, a demand will be made for the package to be traced. If 14 days after the first dispatch there is still no delivery, a second package will be sent free.
Packages inside Lebanon are sent registered through LibanPost to guarantee reception, and delay or non-delivery is rare. In the event of non-delivery, nothing can be done for 6 days. At the end of this period, on our being informed, a demand will be made to LibanPost for the package to be traced. If 12 days after the first dispatch there is still no delivery, a second package will be sent free.
