Description
-An English: Passionate about Saida’s old town, Andre Sacy relies on an important documentation, goes back in history, uncovers errors, and describes the life and relations between Saida’s various communities.
First, there is History as viewed by the region, from Christ to the Arabs, from the Crusaders to the Ottomans, including Fakhreddin, Jazzar, Beshir, trade, religious missions, archeological plunder, and the French Mandate up to Lebanon’s independence. Then, there are visits to the castles, khans, palaces, places of worship, hammams, souks and museums, with stories here and there so that memory can be preserved.
Ancient and recent Saida’s old town is not a history book nor a tourist guide. It is a testimonial of what one can see from the past of a town that should be better known by Lebanese, and more than of a stopover for tourists.
