Description
LebanonPostcard presents Campus 73 – A publication by the students of the American University of Beirut, Lebanon – Najib Azzam and Jumana Nuwayri – Hardcover with paper cover, 29x22x3.5 cm, 552 pages.
For the University Yearbook Committee, 1972-73 was the year of challenge, particularly for those of us who have participated in producing previous yearbooks.
The challenge was twinfold: First, we had to create new ideas in content and presentation thus aiming at an end – a result that will compare favorably with its predecessors. Second, we were faced with a number of obstacles, the most important one being the nationwide shutdown in May when a civil war almost broke out in Lebanon, which delayed our production schedule by one month.
Nevertheless, we have succeeded in establishing two all-time records in the history of the A.U.B. yearbook:
1. The largest number of students photographed (in spite of the growing student apathy on campus).
2. The highest income from advertising (in spite of the political turmoil in the country).
On the following pages, we are glad to offer you among the usual things:
1. A documented report on A.U.B.’s program study which alleged aim was to help the University overcome its financial crisis.
2. A brief history of every school on campus which replaces the traditional message by the Dean to the graduating class.
3. The colored cartoons at the beginning of each section in the book.
4. A pictorial rundown of the events of the year and the activities of the Student Council,
The only unfavorable point is the financial situation which, due to many economic reasons, has prevented us from continuing the Yearbook Scholarship Fund which was started in 1971, and which has assisted more than fifty needy students.
Our acknowledgments go to every person who has helped in the production of Campus ’73, especially to Fawaz C. Najia who was there with his valuable advice at our most difficult moments.
Finally, I would like to conclude with a personal note. Charing the Yearbook Committee for the second time was a unique experience in my life especially after producing Campus ’71 which prompted the university “decision makers” to suspend me from readmission to A.U.B. for one semester.
