A part le culte d’Echmoun, dieu-guérisseur sollicité activement dans l’Art de guérir, les armes de la Médecine n’ont pas beaucoup varié depuis la Phénicie jusqu’à l’arrivée des premiers médecins libanais diplômés. La composition de médicaments à base de produits naturels, la réduction des fractures, quelques actes chirurgicaux parfois couronnés de succès, des cautérisations, représentèrent pendant toute cette période l’activité principale de la pratique médicale.
Il faut attendre le XIXe siècle pour voir le Liban rentrer de plein pied dans l’ère de la médecine moderne de l’époque. L’Emir Béchir enverra de jeunes libanais faire leurs études médicales à l’étranger, puis ce sera l’arrivée des Missions Protestantes et des Pères Jésuites qui, contre vents et marées, réussiront leurs écoles de médecine, leurs hôpitaux enseignants et réaliseront ainsi la formation d’un corps médical libanais.
La Grande Guerre viendra interrompre cet essor. La famine et le typhus ruinent et dépeuplent le Liban. Mais un pays qui a 6000 ans d’histoire, comme le phénix, renaît toujours de ses cendres.
