Thomas Jenner est un écrivain, peintre et éducateur anglais qui a enregistré son pèlerinage en Palestine en 1872. Miss LB traduisit le livre en français en 1883.
Thomas Jenner raconte dans ce livre ses observations sur son voyage, le pèlerinage en Palestine qui a commencé le 1er août 1872 depuis l’Angleterre. Il est passé d’un train, à un bateau, à un cheval, à une caravane voyageant jour et nuit, à marcher dans le désert le jour sous un soleil de plomb et la nuit dans une atmosphère froide, à dormir dans une grange en bois qui s’élevait des mètres du sol, emportant avec lui des exemplaires de la Bible qu’il distribuait à certains citoyens en signe d’amour, d’affection et de paix.
Il a cherché partout en Palestine les lieux mentionnés dans les Évangiles et s’est efforcé de projeter l’événement historique sur la réalité géographique. Il a parfois réussi, et parfois admis des exagérations, en disant : «Peut-être que cela s’est produit ici, à cet endroit», ou bien il l’a été content de dire : «Ils le croient». Il ne fait aucun doute qu’il connaît en détail la biographie du Christ et sait tout ce qui lui est arrivé, à tel point que pour chaque incident qui lui est arrivé lors de sa visite en Palestine ou en Syrie, il s’est appuyé sur les paroles de Jésus-Christ pour confirmer son opinion.
C’était un pèlerinage, surtout lorsqu’il récupérait l’eau du Jourdain dans des pots et la rapportait chez lui en Angleterre. Le livre se distingue par les dessins que l’écrivain a réalisés de chaque site et de chaque incident survenu, en les relatant avec une peinture et en transmettant la scène à travers l’histoire pour les générations à venir. Soixante-quatorze tableaux racontent l’histoire des six semaines que Thomas a passées entre son domicile en Grande-Bretagne, son voyage en Orient et son retour dans sa famille.
En lisant le livre, vous vous sentez un homme instruit, croyant et peintre artistique qui transmet fidèlement des images de la réalité et mentionne sur presque chaque page un texte de la Bible ou de l’Ancien Testament. Lorsque vous commencez à lire le livre de Jenner, vous ne vous arrêtez pas avant de l’avoir terminé en raison de la chaleur que vous ressentez avec cet éducateur qui atraversé les mers pour le Hajj à Jérusalem et pour connaître les besoins de leurs écoles au Liban, surtout l’école à Souk El Gharb.
