KHAYAT’S ARCHAEOLOGICAL & HISTORICAL SERIES
General Editor: G. Lankester Harding, C.B.E.,F.S.A.,
Fellow of University College, London
Production: John Carswell
THIS SERIES is designed primarily for the layman who is interested in Near Eastern archaeology and history. At the same time, the Editor and Publishers are concerned that the accuracy and production of the works should be such that they will serve as a simple introduction to their subjects, acceptable alike to the professional archaeologist and the amateur.
It is proposed that the series should cover the area not in terms of modern geographical units nor of ancient chronological divisions, but rather that the history of the Middle East should be traced through the ebb and flow of the various ethnic groups who have influenced, for good or bad, the growth of civilization in this important area, and should be illustrated by the visible traces they have left which have subsequently been revealed by excavation. Thus, some of the greatest sites, Byblos, Baalbeck, Jericho, Petra and Palmyra, may occur in different context in several of the proposed volumes.
The provisional list of subjects is as follows:
The Neolithic World
The Egyptians
The Hyksos
The Amorites
The Phoenicians
The Greeks in the Orient
The Nabateans
The Romans in the Orient
The Byzantine World
The Persian Conquest
The Ommayads
The Ottomans
By actually producing this series in the Near East, whether written by foreign or Near Eastern scholars, and thus tracing the whole history of the area in terms of the different groups of people who have inhabited it in the past they hope to make some small contribution to the general understanding of the area itself.
The publishers hope particularly to attract young scholars to contribute to their series, and any suggestions for expansion of their list of subjects, and criticism of the individual works, will be appreciated.
