…C’est de ce cimetière et de son Comment que ces pages parleront… Du «pourquoi?». Auguste Comte disait déjà: «L’on ne peut être sur son balcon et se voir passer dans la rue»… Sur ce balcon, encore, nous sommes.
Parce que le temps n’est pas encore venu de traiter objectivement de la «Guerre du Liban», ce livre se donne pour tâche de rapporter, ce qui, au fil des jours et durant deux ans, constitua notre pain quotidien. Jamais le souci de la bienséance n’a pu l’emporter là où la cruauté avait son mot à dire ou son image à montrer. De même, jamais la cruauté ne devait s’affirmer là où s’annonçait un espoir, une tentative de calme, une réconciliation… bref, un quelque chose d’humain.
L’objectivité a ceci de fatal, elle est le fruit d’une subjectivité. Poussant ainsi les choses jusqu’à leurs absurdes limites, une photo dirons-nous, n’est, qu’en tant qu’elle est œuvre d’un photographe! Et alors?! Alors, notre seule issue possible se réduirait au silence, au néant… Le néant, non, car nous sommes et c’est en devenant que l’on s’affirme. Ce devenir, oui, et c’est cet abracadabrant moment de devenir que nous relatons dans ces pages et à travers ces photos. «…Il faisait, de toute évidence, de la progression géométrique, cette maladie incurable des morts. Comment avait-il pu attraper cela chez nous?»

«Comment avait-il pu attraper cela chez nous?». On ne peut être assassin du jour au lendemain, la civilisation n’étant pas fonction de l’instant. Que répondre alors au «comment avait-il pu attraper cela chez nous?». Et ce fut le canevas de la mort… Deux ans de massacres et nous revoilà… drôle de guerre où l’assassin est victime et l’assassiné privé même d’une cause d’assassinat. Drôle de guerre qui n’a abouti à rien, sinon qu’à aboutir à rien. Un rien plein de sens, un rien voulu, monté: l’incapacité d’être. L’histoire a connu divers prétextes de guerre, mais ce qu’elle a connu au Liban, est du domaine de l’horrible : Entretuez-vous d’abord, les causes viendront après.
Danton affirmait: «On n’emporte pas sa patrie à la semelle de ses souliers».
