Pendant plus de cent cinquante ans, l’Occident a perçu l’Orient à travers les yeux de David Roberts. La première édition de lithographies, consacrée à ses voyages
en Terre-Sainte et en Egypte, eut un succès immédiat. Ses images, sans cesse reproduites depuis, n’ont jamais perdu leur pouvoir d’évocation. Elles ne sont, toutefois, ni de simples photos touristiques, ni des cartes postales du Levant. Ses paysages sont tout de suite familiers et insaisissables. La précision du dessin produit une illusion de réalisme photographique qui séduit tout en étant finalement trompeuse. Chaque image est, en effet, transformée subtilement et la notion de site intensifiée. Roberts, le plus grand peintre de scène de théâtre de son époque, trouva l’ultime toile de fond parmi les tas de rochers et les déserts spectaculaires de Syrie et d’Egypte, les monuments grandioses de l’antiquité et la topographie de la Bible. Son oeuvre est la réalisation picturale des écrits de
Lamartine, Nerval et Kinglake. Le paysage de rêve de l’Orient.

J’ai été séduit par l’art de Roberts tout comme les autres voyageurs en Orient. A travers ma carrière, j’ai eu la bonne chance de suivre ses pas, de me tenir debout
devant les édifices qu’il a immortalisés et de calibrer mes perceptions selon les siennes. Mon engagement personnel a été d’autant plus grand que nous partageons la même ville natale – Edimbourg, l’Athènes du Nord, une cité avec des vues tant spectaculaires que classiques. J’ai convoité ses œuvres et (finances le permettant) occasionnellement réalisé mes ambitions d’en acquérir quelques-unes.

Aujourd’hui, Richard A. Chahine a réalisé, en un volume, l’essence de la vision de Roberts du Levant. Cet ouvrage comprend toutes les illustrations du Liban
ainsi que les chefs-d’œuvre de la Terre-Sainte, l’Egypte et la Jordanie. Il s’agit d’un valeureux manuel et une occasion pour chaque voyageur, de type marcheur aux pieds poussiéreux ou assis confortablement dans son fauteuil, de revivre un peu plus, la vision et le rêve.

For over 150 years, the West has viewed the Near East through the eyes of David Roberts. The first edition of lithographs of his travels in the Holy Land and
Egypt was an instant success. Endlessly reproduced ever since his images have never lost their power to evoke. But these are no mere tourist snapshots, no postcards from the Levant. His landscapes are at once familiar and elusive. The precise draughtsmanship produces an illusion of photographic realism that is satisfyingly seductive and ultimately misleading. For each image is subtly altered, the sense of place intensifies. Roberts the greatest theatrical scene painter of his day found the ultimate backdrop amidst the dramatic jumbled rocks and deserts of Syria and Egypt, the great monuments of antiquity, and the topography of the Bible. This is the pictorial realization of the writings of Lamartine, Nerval, and Kinglake. The landscape of dreams of the Orient.

Like other travelers in the Orient, I too have succumbed to the seduction of Roberts’ art. I have had the good fortune in my career to follow in his footsteps, to
stand before the places he has immortalized, and to calibrate my perceptions against his record. My personal engagement has been all the greater because we share a common birthplace – Edinburgh, the Athens of the North, a city of dramatic and classical views. I have coveted and (finances permitting) occasionally fulfilled ambitions to own a little of his work.

Now, Richard A. Chahine has realised in one volume, the essence of Roberts’ vision of the Levant. This book contains all the illustrations of Lebanon and the masterpieces of the Holy Land, Egypt, and Jordan. It is a valuable compendium and an opportunity for every traveler, whether of the dusty-footed or armchair variety, to relive the vision and dream a little more.

تمهید – دافيد روبرتس، عضو في الأكادمية الملكية البريطانية: رسالة تقدير

طوال أكثر من مئة وخمسين سنة نظر الغرب الى الشرق من خلال عيني دافيد روبرتس. لقد لاقت الطبعة الأولى من رسوم الطباعة الحجرية الخاصة برحلاته الى الأرض المقدسة ومصر نجاحا فوريا سريعا، فصوره التي استمر نشرها منذ ذلك الحين ما فقدت قط قيمتها الايحائية. فهي ليست مجرد رسوم شمسية سياحية ولا بطاقات بريدية مأخوذة عن الشرق الأدنى. ان رسومه للمناظر تميزت بكونها أليفة وتفوق الإدراك. ذلك ان دقة الرسم تثير وهم الواقعية في التصوير الشمسي وتجذب الناظر اليها مع انها بالنهاية خداعة. فكل صورة، في الواقع، قد تحولت بمهارة، فيما تكثف بروز منظر المكان المرسوم. فقد وجد روبرتس، وهو اعظم رسام لمشاهد المسرح في عصره، آخر خلفية لرسومه بين اكداس الصخور وفي قفار سوريا ومصر الرائعة، كما في الابنية الأثرية العظيمة في العصور القديمة وفي خريطة الكتاب المقدس. في عمله هذا تجسيد تصويري لكتابات لا مرتين وجيرارده نرفال وكنغليك، وهو أيضا تحقيق لمشهد حلم الشرق .

لقد اجتذبني فن روبرتس كما اجتذبتني اعمال سائر الرحالة الى الشرق. وخلال عملي كان لي الحظ بان اتابع خطاه فتستوقفني الأبنية التي خلدها فأحاول ان أطبع حسي للألوان على غراره. وكان التزامي الشخصي بهذا الشأن عظيما لأننا ننتسب معا الى مسقط الرأس عينه، مدينة ادنبرغ، آثينة الشمال، المميزة بمناظرها التي تجمع بين الروعة والأصالة. لقد اشتهيت اعماله الفنية وبقدر ما سمحت لي امكاناتي المادية حققت حلمي بابتياعي بعضها في المناسبات .

واليوم ها ريشار عبدالله شاهين قد جسد في مجلد واحد جوهر رؤية روبرتس الى الشرق. وهذا الكتاب يضم كل الرسوم الجميلة المأخوذة عن لبنان كما روائع الأرض المقدسة والأردن، أنه لكتاب قيم جدا يتيح فرصة لكل مسافر، سواء اكان من نوع العدائين في غبار الطرق أو متربعا في مقعده الوثير ان ينعم النظر أكثر في بهاء الرؤية والحلم .
