Beirut vs. Beirut (64.5 x 91 cm)

Once again the war is the theme in Walid Zbib’s work. 1990, “Beirut vs. Beirut”, the title says it all. What do you expect from a city tearing itself apart?

The museum crossing point between West Beirut and East Beirut was a decisive and dangerous place representing the dichotomy of a city in torment.
“Beirut vs. Beirut” presents an ironic overview of the social and political situation in Beirut near the end of the civil war.

In the center is “Mansour Castle”, one of the many symbols of the war, used by politicians as a provisory parliament.

Barricades, fuel smuggling, land mines, bread trafficking and all sorts of war games, come together in this humorous and witty poster that’s very rich in detail. You surely will not uncover its many facets at once!

Beirut… Have A Nice Day (57.5 x 82 cm)

Beirut, 1987, the civil war was far from ending. The renowned Hamra Street, one of the main symbols of Beirut’s modernity and rising culture in the 1960s and 1970s, had become more of a frantic circus where people lost most of their senses, bread was worth your life and water was a luxury…

The artist, Walid Zbib, who was only 22 years old back then, chose Hamra Street as the scene of his artwork because while being similar to any other street in Beirut at that time, Hamra was very rich in controversy.

With a witty play on words, a meticulous sense of observation and attention to detail, the artist came very close to the core concerns of the regular Lebanese during the civil war.

“Beirut… Have A Nice Day” is a sarcastic and tremendously funny poster that had a great effect on popular culture and is still remembered by many today, even after years of its first publication.

Whether you lived through the Lebanese war or just heard about it, “Beirut… Have A Nice Day” is an invitation to look back on those days with a smile and a bit of irony… But then again who knows, maybe that “Nice Day” will truly come!

We provide as well two postcards of the same posters, 21×15 cm.
