Description

LebanonPostcard presents a rare beautiful calendar full of photos and culture. The calendar comes as an homage to the Ancient Tyre (Tyr l’Antique) – 1982 – Engagement Calendar (Agenda Guide) – Printed at the Imprimerie Catholique Beyrouth 1981 – Hardcover book, 20×22.5 cm, 122 pages.

This small volume has two purposes: to serve as Lebanon’s Archaeological Engagement Calendar for 1982 and, once the year comes to an end, to serve as a guidebook for Lebanon’s prestigious ancient site of Tyre.
From the earliest times, Tyre’s privileged position as a flourishing commercial centre attracted to it the envy of the peoples of the Old World. During the sixth century B.C. when the great army of Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon stood before Tyre, Ezekiel prophesized the destruction of the city: “Thou shall be a bare rock, thou shall be a place for the spreading of nets, thou shall never be rebuilt.” This
was not to be for Nebuchadnezzar was unable to take the port city and Tyre knew its greatest commercial and industrial expansion several centuries later during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

What meets the eye today on the site is the Roman-Byzantine Tyre. The reader is guided through the “Imperial City”, the “City of the Dead”, Tyre’s magnificent hippodrome and other points of interest. This is but the beginning of what ancient Tyre has to offer. For in the years to come, when excavations are resumed, the Canaanite-Phoenician levels will come to light, the Tyre of the second and first millennia B.C. praised as being “perfect in beauty, whose borders were in the midst of the seas”. But let us go back in time, earlier still, when Tyre first appears on the historical scene.
