Gibran Khalil Gibran
January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931
Lebanese poet, philosopher, and artist known worldwide, Gibran was born in Becharré, and immigrated with his family to the USA because of poverty. There, wide horizons of culture and arts became within his reach and drove him to become a pioneer in the literary, artistic, and poetry revival in the world.
Grief and sorrow early filled his life, and such pain was an additional trigger to his genius. A love story related him to Mary Haskell who greatly influenced his career. He revolted against traditions, clergymen and feudalism, and always called for freedom. His philosophy is based on justice, democracy, and equality between men and women. He formed the “Pen League” to infuse a new life in the Arabic literature. English and Arabic mystical essayist, Gibran counts 16 books, the most well-known being “The Prophet”, translated into more than 20 languages and considered among the best-selling books worldwide, Gibran is also a talented artist, mainly is drawing and watercolor paintings.
At the zenith of his literary success, he was struck by tuberculosis. He dies in New York in 1931, at the age of 48. Before his death, Gibran expressed the wish to be buried in Lebanon. One year after his death, his wish was fulfilled, his corpse was transported to Mar Sarkis Monastery, in Becharré, which has since become the “Gibran Khalil Gibran Museum”. On his epitaph, is written: “I am alive like you, and I now stand beside you. Close your eyes and look around, you will see me in front of you.”
