Habitat Fortifié et Architecture Religieuse – Fortified Dwellings and Religious Architecture – Volume 2 –
Softcover book 33×23.5 cm with protection, 176 pages – Chahine Gallery 1997

More than 3000 Lebanese sites have been assembled on a database in order to prepare this work.
This volume contains 176 pages, 435 illustrations, 600 touristic sites as well as texts from 58 authors.

Lebanon’s enormous heritage is one of the richest in the world. From the time of the Phoenicians, right up to modern day history, a whole myriad of civilisations and political developments have played out their acts, one after another, on the very same sites; in doing so, they link together the sanctuaries and places of worship, some of which are of an immense size (we only have to think of Baalbeck), while others overflow with memories or are places of deep veneration; all however bear witness to a people whose minds are turned towards the divinity and this is often characterised by the devotion of the most humble of the people in a manner which cannot fail to evoke the emotion.

The various religious denominations found it necessary to establish their presence and their power by building fortifications and, often, prestigious castles which are still haunted by the spirits of dreams which have died. But these fortifications remind us that these peoples felt the need to protect themselves; they bear witness to a desire to live and to thrive and it is this same desire which, throughout a history which has seen the country governed by many different authorities, has given Lebanon its very survival to this day.

Whether we are talking about the places of worship or fortifications, these monuments are also the proof of an extraordinary vitality. It is a great and useful quest to get to know them more and indeed to understand them better. My wish is that this book might serve as a bridge towards such knowledge and understanding.
