A person’s character is shaped partly by his or her early memories; mine are in Beirut.

The busy streets, the smells, “the government’s mule” i.e. public busses, and the largest collection of Mercedes Benz 180s in any one place in the world back in the sixties! The street vendors, the juice bars, and sandwich shops. The hummus and fool parlors. The Souks all the way from the fish market to the jewelry market.

Yes, part of my personality, has been shaped by the most beautiful capital on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The capital which hosted the first law faculty in the world, a few hundred years BC, the capital of Mediterranean cuisine, and the capital which produced the most cosmopolitan people on earth.

We decided to take you back to the fifties, and the sixties, to the last century, with a collection of photos from the archives of the Ministry of Tourism.

Nostalgia is a very special human feeling, it touches the heart and the soul. Nostalgia in Beirut can bring tears, laughter, love, hate, pride, and prejudice, but certainly contentment and happiness, to everyone who knows this city.

I hope you will all see Beirut through our eyes, Lebanese eyes, we feel that this spirit of Beirut which has been around for thousands of years will always dominate the hearts of its visitors.

Enjoy
