LebanonPostcard presents Lebanon Shot Twice – Dar Al Nahar لبنان… By photographer Hayat Karanouh – Text Zaven Kouyoumdjian – Hardcover book, 32.5×24 cm, 238 pages

The black curtain fell on the day following the nuclear explosion.

The darkness was mixed with the same rotten smell as that of the shelters which had brought the Lebanese together throughout the war.

I do not recall the name of the theatre, but I clearly remember how empty it was, as empty as the first scene of the American movie itself.

I stepped out of the movie feeling I was actually living through a nuclear war. And why not? After all, death is death, whether caused by nuclear or sectarian fire?

I have been obsessed with this idea for years without ever daring to share it with anyone for fear of embarrassment:

What happens when cameras stop rolling, lights go off and the film crew leaves?
When no one is left to tell the story?
That is where the idea of this book came from.

It only kicked off when I found a forgotten drawer full of old photos I had cut out of different newspapers during the war.

They were pictures of faces and people I had lived my childhood collecting them.

Had their life been frozen in time, or had our recollection of them been confined to a photo, a mere moment from which they have moved on?

Had they understood why?
Had the war, their war, ended?

Those questions remained unanswered, until I started investigating. And I must admit, it was harder than I thought.

Long hours spent in newspaper and magazine archives resulted in addresses wiped out by the war and names that remained unlisted in all post-war phone directories.

I had to go from street to street, village to village, house to house, and sometimes even from door to door, in search of those sad or smiling, victorious or defeated faces…

Just faces with no names or identities.

While searching for my missing faces, I discovered pictures of places I could not have imagined differently.

I added them to the collection and there it was: a book which begins with the photo of the famous Ain El Remmaneh bus, and ends with the Israeli 1993 air invasion unifying the Lebanese against one enemy – a date I consider as the true end of the civil war.

This was ten years ago.
Did we feel time pass?
Another question for another book maybe.

I ask you not to read this book with the sectarian or regional values of war in mind.

This is not a book about war.
Nor is it a history book.

It is simply a tribute to the witnesses and heroes of war. The people who experienced the joy of meeting and the pain of death during years of madness.

It is a search for forgotten stories that will only be told to youngsters during nights with nothing good on television.

Just an attempt to foresee the collective memory of future generations.

Zaven Ardaches Kouyoumdjian
