LebanonPostcard presents a rare book: A selection of the 54 works of the artist caricaturist Pierre Sadek between the years 1964 and 1975 in a box. The caricature panels are printed on single sheets (18 x 47 cm) in colour, white and black, with historical documentation, and on the occasion of the first anniversary of the late Pierre Sadek. 1000 copies were made of this artistic document.

مجموعة منتخبة من أعمال الفنان الرسام بيار صادق ما بين عامي 1964 و1975 في علبة تحتوي على 54 لوحة كاريكاتير مطبوعة على أوراق منفردة (18×47 cm) بالألوان وبالأبيض والأسود، مع توثيق تاريخي، وذلك بمناسبة مرور عام على وفاته. نافذة وصنع منها ١٠٠٠ نسخة فقط.

The outside box, made of leather and velvet (52x24x5 cm) has minor scratches, however, the inside box and printed papers are still new.

الصندوق الخارجي مصنوع من الجلد والمخمل (52x24x5 سم) به خدوش بسيطة، لكن الصندوق الداخلي والأوراق المطبوعة لا تزال جديدة.

A year after his untimely departure, the Pierre Sadek Foundation began its work with the publication of selected published and unpublished works by Pierre Sadek dated between 1964 and 1975. It proffers this selection as an invitation to return and discover anew the work of an artist who began at the young age of twenty-four in Beirut’s newspaper Annahar, a lifelong engagement with daily caricature. The Foundation regards this selection as a preface to a long and distinguished artistic and journalistic career, which accompanied the greater part of Lebanon’s modern history. In these early works, Sadek reveals himself a perspicacious reader of politics, a critic, and an indefatigable jester establishing the basis for a forthcoming corpus of drawings. While figuring on the last page of dailies and at the conclusion of nightly televised newscasts, his work foregrounded the editorial caricature as a genre. The Foundation chose these caricatures to emphasize Sadek’s interest in the minutes of an Arab-Israeli struggle weighed upon by Cold War conditions and both of their impact on Lebanon’s cold civil peace. Moreover, this selection displays the stylistic development of Sadek’s work and his elaboration of the rich visual language with which he pioneered caricature over five decades.

In publishing this selection, carefully reproduced from well-kept originals, the Pierre Sadek Foundation embarks on the long journey of gathering and organizing his immense body of work in a public archive open to students, researchers and all who seek to know the trajectory of this artist and the history of this republic.

بعد سنة على غياب بيار صادق، تستهل مؤسسة بيار صادق عملها بنشر مجموعة منتخبة من أعماله الأولى المنشورة منها وغير المنشورة ما بين عامي ۱۹٦٤ و ۱۹۷۵ . تتقدم المؤسسة، في هذه المجموعة، بدعوة لاستكشاف وإعادة النظر في كاريكاتور فنان شاب بدأ رحلته الطويلة مع الكاريكاتور اليومي في جريدة النهار وهو لم يبلغ بعد عامه الرابع والعشرين هي مجموعة تريدها المؤسسة توطئة لسيرة فنية وصحافية طويلة واكبت الجزء الأكبر من تاريخ لبنان الحديث بالنقد والمسائلة والمحاكاة والانخراط فأنتجت عملاً ضخماً وضع فيه بيار صادق الكاريكاتور السياسي في الواجهة وإن من على الصفحة الأخيرة ومن خاتمة النشرة التلفزيونية في انتخابها هذه المجموعة آثرت المؤسسة إظهار اهتمام بيار صادق في مُجريات الحرب الباردة، وانعكاساتها على الصراع العربي الإسرائيلي، وتداعياتهما على شروط السلم الأهلي البارد في لبنان. كما ركزت المؤسسة على إبراز تطور رسومات صادق، وتبلورها في لغة بصرية تشكيلية غنية في سرديتها ومجازاتها بنى عليها الفنان لغة كاريكاتورية سبّاقة على مدى خمسة عقود.

إن مؤسسة بيار صادق، إذ تستهل عملها بنشر هذه المجموعة، المنقولة بألوانها وتفاصيلها الكثيرة عن رسومات أصلية، فهي تبدأ مشوارها الطويل نحو تجميع إرث ،صادق، وتنظيمه، ووضعه في أرشيف عمومي، ليكون في متناول
الطلاب والباحثين، وكل من يرغب في التعرف على مسيرة هذا ،الفنان، وتاريخ هذه الجمهورية.

Pierre Sadek (1938-2013)

Studied Fine Arts at the Academie Libanaise des Beaux Arts (ALBA).
Contributed to several Lebanese and Arabic dailies such as Annahar, Al Anwar, Al Amal, Al Joumhouria, Ad-Diyar, Annahar al Arabi wal Duwali and Al Siyasa.
Published internationally in various magazines, newspapers and news agencies such as Associated Press, United Press International, Time Magazine, Le Matin, France Soir, Washington Post, Atlas Magazine, Jeune Afrique and Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Credited for pioneering televised animated caricatures following nightly newscasts on The Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation – LBC (1986-2002) and Future Television – FTV (2002-2013).
Exhibited caricatures, drawings and paintings locally and internationally: St Georges, Lebanon (1969), “War and Peace,” Kuwait (1972), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (1977), “Pierre Sadek 80,” Damo Gallery, Lebanon (1980) and “This is My Lebanon,” Washington D.C (1984).
Books published: Caricature Sadek (1964), Idhak Ma’ Pierre Sadek ‘Ala el Syassiyyeen (1972), Kuluna ‘al Watan (1977) and Bashir (1983).
Received several awards such as the Said Akl Award (1965) and (2003), the Kamal el Murr Award (1988), The Shield of the National Library, Baakleen (2000), The Dubai Press Club Award (2000), the Lions Award (2000), the Liberty Lions Award (2000) and a Recognition Award from the Tunis Festival of Art (2013).
Decorated with the National Order of the Cedar: grade of Knight by President Suleiman Frangieh in 1972, grade of Officer by President Elias Hrawi in 1997 and grade of Commander by President Michel Suleiman in 2012.
