Description
LebanonPostcard presents a rare book (Used but like new): Printing in Lebanon and the Orient الطباعة في لبنان و المشرق – Sader publishers – Hardcover book, 32×24 cm, 224 pages, English and Arabic, 2009.
Introduction:
The present book does not aim at giving a historical overview of the art of printing in the Middle East. There are several references regarding the said topic, most importantly the works of Father Louis Sheikho, Gerge Zeidan, Father Joseph Nasrallah, and Khalil Sabat, in addition to several articles and seminars (The reader will find in the Chapter of “Selected References”, at the end of the present research paper, all the references we have mentioned). Indeed, the present book goes beyond a mere historical work – which is useless to be repeated to shed the light on the relationship between the printing art in the Middle East and the cultural factors which have positively or negatively affected its emergence and which have contributed to its development or decline. It is noteworthy that printing is not a phenomenon which is isolated from the socio-cultural setting where it has originated, and cannot be understood at all, unless within the surrounding epistemological, ideological, political, and economic environment.
Despite its importance and necessity, a mere historical overview of printing does not fulfill our needs.
