Fate of the free
Gebran Tueni, An Nahar editorial October 2, 2004, commenting on the previous day’s attack on Marwan Hamade
Yes, harmony in Lebanon is still forbidden. And dialogue is forbidden. And reconciliation is forbidden. And the unity of the opposition is forbidden.
For these reasons, they tried to assassinate Marwan Hamade, the symbol of national unity and dialogue, co-existence and rational opposition, reason and logic, reconciliation in the
mountains and co-existence in Lebanon.
What happened is a message addressed to all Lebanese, most of all to Walid Jumblatt, who has been targeted ever since the issue of extending the presidential term, as well as to the opposition in general. We do not want to point fingers at anyone before the result of the inquiry, but it is our right to say the state is first and foremost responsible for the security of its citizens. There is no excuse for negligence.
And we wonder why Lebanon is today going through such security tremors both physically and verbally. Why is Lebanon, especially today, suffering bombings, torment, and all sorts of factional strife? Why didn’t this atmosphere prevail over the presidential extension, and before the establishment of an opposition that embodies real Lebanese unity yet is diverse in its political and religious inclinations? Unless, of course, even the question is now forbidden.
In any case, while awaiting the inquiry results, we would like to tell those who send threatening messages, implicit and explicit, the latest being the attempt to assassinate Marwan Hamade, that our response will be our abiding cohesion, invulnerable national unity, internal strength, and newly fortified opposition. We will stand together against every attempt to marginalise or disrupt peace. We will do so to make our freedom of decision, sovereignty, and independence stronger than any threat or attempted assassination.
He who is afraid of dialogue with knights of democracy such as Marwan Hamade, who chose the language of reason and the word to fight blackmail, threats, booby traps and murder, is a coward who has no place among honest free people. Lebanon’s freedom is destined to be baptised in blood, but it is also fated to maintain its dignity and to rise above and conquer all conspiracies, no matter where they originate.
