IWSAW – The Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World

The Arab Woman in the Changing Arab World

Who is she and what is her role? Is rapid economic, technological and social change affecting her self-image and development? How is modernization influencing her contributions to her home, her family and her society?

In order to examine these and other questions relating to the Arab woman, Beirut University College, long a leader in the field of women’s education in the Middle East, established the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World in October 1973 through a grant from the Ford Foundation.

The Institute is designed to encourage and evaluate research into the history, conditions, and evolving needs of women and children in the Arab world. With the results of this research the Institute hopes to communicate a better understanding of the Arab woman, her traditional role, and her place in modern society, and to provide the knowledge and insights which will enable BUC and other educational institutions in the region to develop curricula which are responsible to her needs and aspirations.
