FOREWORD
The reader who opens this book with the expectation of finding an exhaustive history of Baalbek will be disappointed. A complete history of the city would fill volumes.
Baalbek’s glamorous, opulent and wondrous past, its thrilling history through the days of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Mongols, Tartars, Crusaders, Turks, Etc…, all present difficulties to a writer attempting to crowd its diversities into a few printed pages. My problem is obviously one of condensation and selection, and the events that I have stressed are those which seemed most important or interesting.
Because the past is bound up in any proper appreciation of Baalbek’s present temples and ruins, I have had to vitalise my narrative with historical highlights gleaned from established sources, which are listed on the following page.
Unfortunately, the various Roman emperors who – over a period of three hundred years – participated in building and completing the stupendous temples at Baalbek, did not leave us an account of their methods. An illustrated chapter clearing this enigma, is one of many new revelations that are featured in this unique volume on Baalbek.
Baalbek, 21 April 1955
