Au Moyen-Age, Baalbek était considérée phénicienne et attribuée aux bâtisseurs de Tyr. Mais depuis deux cent cinquante ans, on l’appelle romaine.
Alors, romaine ou phénicienne? Aucun document antique n’a survécu pour nous le dire: le mystère le plus absolu plane sur les noms des constructeurs du plus grand monument du monde. On en est réduit à faire comme les détectives dans les romans policiers: à ramasser les indices pour essayer de découvrir qui a construit Baalbek et pourquoi.
