Description

LebanonPostcard presents the book Kahlil Gibran and Ameen Rihani – Prophets of Lebanese-American Literature. Edited by Naji Oueijan, Assaad Eid, Carol Kfoury, Doumit Salameh – NDU Publisher. Characteristic: 24×17 cm, softcover, 247 pages.

This book includes the proceedings of the First International Conference on Lebanese-American Library Figures, held in August 1998. The subtitle of the conference (the title of this book): “Kahlil Gibran and Ameen Rihani, Prophets of Lebanese-American Literature,” summarizes the specific themes of the conference. Scholars from around the world present in-depth discussions of Kahlil Gibran’s and Ameen Rihani’s pioneering and consequential contributions to national and international literature.

“For the master spirit of the earth shall not sleep peacefully upon the wind till the needs of the least of you are satisfied.” Kahlil Gibran in The Prophet.

“My dear Ameen,

New York has never been and never will be the home of poets and men of imagination. But I believe that your great soul will weave a fine nest between the branches of that confused tree.” Kahlil Gibran in a letter to Rihani.

“Week and oppressed nations are fundamentally spiritual: strong nations are, as a rule, chiefly materialistic. The one, cherishing religious ideals, soars to certain spiritual heights and now and then produces a seer to justify its languor and indolence; the other, seeking material things, bores into the earth for its treasures and keeps going down, down till its dynamic forces reach and impenetrable sterility and explode in a sudden, terrible, reaction.” Ameen Rihani in The Path of Vision.
