INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
Syria is unquestionably one of the richest countries in the world in terms of vestiges of the past. This land, pregnant with history and civilization, a pivotal point between the East and the West, a link between three continents, a communications route and the cradle of the oldest civilizations, has always intrigued archeologists and scholars.
Whole volumes would be needed to describe the archeological riches and tourist attractions of Syria, for in this country legend and history are interwoven; it was doubtless here that the prodigious epic of human civilization originated.
Mysterious civilizations, unknown to this day, succeeded one another there. All over Syria lie incomparable treasures and dead cities which emerge from the sand, sometimes unexpectedly in the course of prospecting for oil or minerals.
A journey through Syria is a breath-taking adventure, a fascinating exploration of a past of extraordinary diversity which comes alive before the traveller’s eyes.
In Damascus, the glorious capital of the Omeyades, once the centre of the powerful Arab Empire extending as far as India, the Caucasus, Morocco and Elba, are to be found traces of past civilizations dating back thousands of years. The Saint Paul gate, one of the oldest churches in Christendom, the Roman ramparts, the Byzantine chapels, the Great Mosque where the tomb of Saint John the Baptist is venerated, the souks with their traditional shops, all delight the eye, stimulate the imagination, and provide food for thought. Here too is the Azem Palace, an exquisite jewel that has been lovingly maintained, and the impressive Museum containing incalculable riches dating from all eras.
Then there is central Syria from whose desert sands rise, like phantoms of another age, the Crac des Chevaliers and the fabulous ruins of Palmyra whose marble and granite buildings are haunted by the ghost of the legendary Queen Zenobia.
Not forgetting Homs and Hama on the banks of the Orontes; Aleppo with its tall citadel, standing as a reminder of Saladin, overlooking a flourishing oriental township possessing the most colourful souks in the Arab world; Lattaquie, whose port was designed by the Phoenicians; the Island of Arouad, set like a jewel amid the azure ‘sea; the Roman theatre of Bosra, which has remained miraculously intact to this day; the Roman remains at Soueida; others, thousands of years old, at Mari, in Tell Hariri and Ebla in Tell Mardikh; the Byzantine cathedral of Saint Simeon Stylites, and innumerable other places of outstanding historic interest.
This book invites you to a discovery of Syria. It does not claim to be exhaustive, but aims to serve as an introduction to the Syria of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
