PREFACE

Lebanon is the home of the most celebrated group of Roman temples in the world. Everybody knows Baalbek. The travel books and the guides hammer the superlatives: “the tallest columns”. “the most imposing portal”…”the most sumptuously decorated shrine”… “the largest hewn stones in the world”. The visitor who has been to Baalbek can be forgiven for thinking that he has exhausted the Roman temples of Lebanon.

But he has not. Baalbek is outstanding, but it is just one of nearly forty Roman temple sites in Lebanon, each of which can be visited in a day outing from Beirut. The object of this book is to draw attention to the many seldom-visited temples which would be major monuments in a country less abundantly endowed with Roman remains than Lebanon.

This is a book by an amateur, for the amateur. It is an attempt to bring together under one cover photographs and descriptions of all the Roman temples in Lebanon which are worth visiting. If – as the author hopes the reader is persuaded to visit the lesser-known sites, the book will have served its purpose.

Finally, the author would like to express his grateful thanks to the Publications Committee of the American University of Beirut for their generous financial aid towards the cost of publishing this book, and to Father M. Tallon, S.J., for translating the text into French.
