The people of Lebanon have struggled collectively over this span of fifty years to give themselves an autonomus and independant nation. For all its faults, if Lebanese of today and tomorrow lose faith in their country, they lose faith in life itself.

Acknowledgements

On November 21, 1980, the eve of Lebanese Independence Day, I opened an exhibition whose title was “Lebanon: Stamps and Events, 1920-1970”. The idea for this exhibition had emerged during a conversation with Mr. Farid Abou Fadel, who provided most of the stamps reproduced at the exhibition and in this book, as well as much of the information the book contains.

Other stamps reproduced in the book were provided by Suheil Nassar and Joe Rihan.

The photography was done by Marc Nader and by Alain Orlhac, who have collaborated with me on other important projects related to the Lebanese cultural heritage.

I did much of the research for the book in the library of the American University of Beirut, where I was very kindly assisted by Dr. Youssef Khoury, Ms. Linda Sadaka and Ms. Nawal Bikdache. Ms. Samia Saab of UNESCO and Mr. Said Al Azm of UNICEF provided me with important information about the United Nations.

Faisal Sultan, Mohamed Farhat and Michel Suleiman assisted with Arabic-language editing.

Jean-Marc Marta and my son, Elie Zeenny, contributed to French-language editing. John Reid assisted with English-language editing.

Dar Al Muthalath, publisher of the book, provided overall editorial supervision, layout and printing.

I extend my special thanks to my dear and long-time friend Hana Lababidi for her invaluable assistance throughout the preparation of this book.
