Extract: Good fortune was bestowed on Beirut the day it found someone who lifted the heart of the city out from under the rubble of death and destruction, began to restore its torn landmarks and desolate alleyways. The doors to Beirut are wide open once again and the city is regaining all the signs of a modern culture and civilization that were missing for so long. Supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure and equipped with parking lots, the new downtown area displays areas rich with trees and flowers, and a nightlife that reverberates with the sounds of joyful citizens. People have joined in a vibrant social life under the distinctive luminaries that brighten each street. Heading towards the downtown area from all regions of Lebanon, young people liberated from the grips of war discover the renewed city center. Archiving these changes is no small task, but it cannot compare with the great tour de force that is the rebirth of Beirut, an ancient city of the future. It would also be incomplete if the man whose name is synonymous with the development and reconstruction of the capital is not mentioned. Had it not been for the determined persona of the president of the Council of Ministers Mr. Rafic Hariri, Beirut may not have reached its present state in the short period of time it did. The main goal for the publication of this book is to photograph the memory of the darkest days of Beirut in ruins, in hopes that such days never see the light again. Another reason is to register in print the wonderful renaissance of the city, thus bringing to Lebanese people around the world, hope and faith in the future of their country. This book contains pictures taken in the early nineties, to document that war can bring nothing more than catastrophe to a people and an economy. Other pictures taken during the summer of 2002 portray the huge difference and the immense progress happening in the development and reconstruction project.
