Préface:
Pendant que je parcourais L’art au Liban, d’un œil à la fois profane et passionné, une idée s’est imposée à moi: c’est cette diversité-là qui fait, plus que toute autre, la grandeur de notre petit pays. Oui, plus que la multiplicité des appartenances, qu’on assume de bonne ou de mauvaise grâce mais qu’on ne choisit pas, c’est la profusion des styles, des inspirations, des expressions, des partis pris techniques ou esthétiques qui fait la vitalité d’une société humaine, et qui fait sa raison d’être.
L’histoire du Liban racontée par les arts nous console et nous réconcilie avec nous-mêmes. Nous y découvrons une inventivité et une liberté qui se jouent des barrières, des clivages et des conventions; qui se servent des événements, subliment les tragédies, détournent les traditions, contournent les croyances. L’impression qui s’en dégage est celle d’une perpétuelle résistance à la barbarie, à la mort.
On parle souvent de l’art comme d’un reflet de son époque. C’est faire trop de place aux péripéties de l’histoire, et trop peu de place à l’art. Il serait plus juste de dire que l’époque est l’arrière-plan, le cadre du tableau, ou le décor du théâtre. S’il est légitime de s’intéresser aux querelles politiques dans l’Italie de la Renaissance, on n’a pas besoin de les connaître dans le détail pour apprécier les chefs-d’œuvre. Avec le passage du temps, Léonard de Vinci et Michel-Ange ont acquis plus d’importance à nos yeux que les princes qui les employaient, et les architectes d’Istanbul plus d’importance que les sultans devant lesquels ils se prosternaient. Mais faut-il attendre des siècles pour retrouver la bonne perspective, et réparer les injustices? Un jour prochain nos descendants nous reprocheront d’avoir négligé les grands peintres de l’ère de l’Indépendance, et de les avoir laissé mourir tristes.
L’art au Liban évoque cette génération sacrifiée, celle qui l’a précédée, celles qui l’ont suivie, toutes prometteuses, toutes spoliées. Cette rétrospective minutieuse m’apparaît aussi, de ce fait, comme le support d’une méditation sur l’avenir. Méditation indispensable pour qui rêve encore de renaissance.

Credit cards are not charged until we actually ship the items. The items may take between one and six days to arrive, according to the country they are sent to.
Packages are sent with track code to guarantee reception, and delay is rare. In the event of non-delivery or delay, nothing can be done for 7 days. If 14 days after the first dispatch there is still no delivery, a second package will be sent free.
