Description

Al Hoda 1898 – 1968 – The Story of Lebanon and its Emigrants taken from the Newspaper Al-Hoda – Published by Al-Hoda on the occasion of its Seventieth Anniversary – Hardcover book, 23.5×16 cm, 256 pages

This is the story of the Americanization of the Lebanese immigrants, and of the struggle for independence of Lebanon told in terms of an Arabic newspaper that became an institution.

It is THE AL-HODA STORY: 1898-1968

The story began on Washington’s Birthday in 1898 in Philadelphia where Americans declared their own independence of Great Britain. But the symbolism of city and date were lost upon the immigrant Lebanese who wrote the stories, set them in type, printed the newspaper, mailed it out, and billed its subscribers. In the prime of his newspapers and of his career, that young man, Naoum Mokarzel, would speak out for the Lebanese in America and argue in Paris, Versailles, and Geneva for the independence of the land of his fathers.

Under Naoum, then his brother Salloum, and now Salloum’s daughter Mary Mokarzel, Al-Hoda has been the voice, the conscience, and the mirror of Lebanese life in America and in Lebanon. It was properly named in
Arabic “The Guidance,” the role it played for the immigrants.

Here in this book is the story of what happened in the past seventy years: the struggle of Al-Hoda to gain a foothold in America along with its immigrant readers, the constant campaign against intrusions upon Lebanese autonomy by outsiders, the culmination of the supreme effort to achieve Lebanese independence, the climax of full acceptance in America that was symbolized by the White House invitation to the Present publisher of Al-Hoda.

This account is many things to many readers. It is a journalistic tale, a study of assimilation by an immigrant minority, an account of international politics, and a reflection of Middle East nationalism. But most of all, this book is addressed to those Americans for whom Lebanon is the “old country” Americans of the first, second, and third generations, those who were born in Lebanon, or whose parents and grandparents were born there.

It is their story, just as Al-Hoda and its English-language companion, the Lebanese American Journal, are their newspapers.
