Description

War of the Mountain – Israelis, Christians and Druze in the 1983 Mount Lebanon conflict through the Eyes of a Lebanese Forces Fighter – Paul Andary – Translated from Arabic by Rani Geha – Softcover book, 24×17 cm, 248 pages

The War of the Mountain, which the Lebanese commonly call harb al-Jabal, refers to the 1983 conflict in Mount Lebanon’s Chouf and Aley regions. The conflict was another Syrian attempt to control Lebanon and one of the worst chapters in the 1975-1990 Lebanon War; it was also about the old and complex relationship between the Christians and the Druze, the two communities that were at the centre of modern Lebanon’s formation. After Israel entered Lebanon in 1982 to expel the Palestine Liberation Organization, three military forces became present on the same ground in Chouf and Aley: the Israeli army, the (Druze) Progressive Socialist Party led by Walid Junblatt, and the (Christian) Lebanese Forces whose troops in Chouf and Aley were led by Samir Geagea. This book is an edited translation of Al-Jabal, Haqiqa la Tarham written in Arabic by Paul Andary, a former Lebanese Forces military official who participated in that conflict and
wrote the horrendous story of what happened from its historical, political, military, and human aspects. Al-Jabal, Haqiqa la Tarham was published in 1985 and remains in demand to this day.

Paul Andary was born in Aabdin, Bsharre (North Lebanon) on 7 January 1958. He attended Tourza primary school, and the secondary schools of Kfarhata (Koura), Zgharta, and Jdeide (Beirut). He earned an accounting degree from the Centre Libanais in 1977, a law degree from the Lebanese University (Jal El Dib) in 1983, and did four years of religious studies at Université Saint-Esprit de Kaslik. He is a founding member of several religious, social, and national organizations. He joined the Lebanese Forces in 1975, served as an officer from 1980 to 1991, and participated in most of the Lebanon War battles, including Koura (1976), Ashrafieh (1978), Qnat (1980), and the Mountain (1983).

“That painting is on the cover of the book’s Arabic version. It represents the tragedy of the Christians of the Mountain where in 1983 the inhabitants of about 60 Christian villages were killed or displaced. The shape of the tree traces the face of my martyred brother Antoine. The three bodies on the altar are the martyrs Antoine Andary, Tony Wardan, and Ghassan Baaqlini, who were left behind on a church altar in the village of Batloun. The light source on the left represents the hope that the Christian faith inspires even in the darkest moments.” – Paul Andary
